Profiling the industry’s top manufacturers of document & tape collection and storage containers

By P.J. Heller

In this time of new and tougher regulations for document protection, many businesses are faced with the question of how to store and protect documents headed for destruction. There are numerous factors to consider, not the least of which are a company’s budget and amount of storage space. As we all know, every inch of physical space utilized inefficiently costs companies money.

Tightened budgets and difficult economic times have made economy of space a necessity. Businesses want greater efficiency and security for their bucks and are looking for document storage solutions that suit their particular needs. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately as the case may be, no two businesses storage needs are exactly alike.

Fortunately, for businesses large and small, there are several companies in today’s document storage industry that specialize in manufacturing security and collection carts and consoles designed to maximize space and deliver high quality. Businesses have the luxury of choosing from a wide array of document storage solutions – including under-desk and desk-side units, executive consoles that can match most any office décor, space saving carts and consoles, and larger wheeled bins – to meet their individual document protection needs.

We all know that the name of the game in document storage is security, security, security. In today’s market, providers of storage solutions need to be flexible enough to accommodate the widely varying security needs of their clients. More and more businesses are getting serious about the security of their sensitive documents. To keep up with their diverse needs, security solutions for storage units are getting better and more creative, allowing businesses of all sizes to rest assured that their documents are protected from theft and tampering.

The following companies, listed in alphabetical order, are notable for their ability to meet the most demanding needs of businesses and industries when it comes to document storage and protection.

All Source Security Container

All Source Security Container describes itself as a one-stop shop for security and collection containers and is one of the largest manufacturers of carts, consoles and specialty containers for the document destruction industry. The company offers a wide variety of shredding carts, executive consoles and desk-side collection containers. It also touts its “one-key” solution, which allows any of the containers to be opened with a single key.

“Any lock that’s used in carts or consoles or desk-side containers can be opened with one key,” explains company spokesman Drew Dekker. “If a shredding company went into an office, it would only require one key to open all of the units as opposed to having numerous keys to open individual units, which saves time and makes collection more efficient.”

Among the company’s most popular offerings is the Shredinator, which is designed to fit in tight spaces, such as next to a desk or under a counter, but holds the same amount of paper as a traditional console.

The Shredinator, available in 16, 20 and 23 gallon sizes, features a removable and tamper-proof lockable lid. The container can hold up to 60 to 70 pounds of paper with no bag required (internal bag hooks and nylon collection bags are optional).

Another popular product is the DuraFlex shredding console, which is available in sizes from 24 inches to 36 inches high and has a capacity of 70 to 80 pounds of paper.

All Source representatives note that its DuraFlex green console is completely formaldehyde free. All of its consoles use cam connectors and are designed with ultra-strong poly components that reinforce all the points where traditional consoles fail.

All Source also offers a 9-gallon personal document container (PDC), which can fit beside or under a desk. It has a capacity of 30 pounds and can also be opened using the company’s “one key” solution.

The company’s line of shredding carts are available in four different styles, ranging from a slimmed down version to a large-volume, four-wheel collection cart that has a 175 gallon capacity and can hold up to 600 pounds of paper.

The two-wheel cart designs offer capacities from 32 to 96 gallons. All offer external hasp locking systems, with some models featuring a “lockjaw” lock, part of the one-key solution.

All Source, which began nearly a decade ago, is headquartered in Canada. It also has manufacturing, pickup and distribution centers in Southern California and North Carolina.

Bomac Carts

Bomac Carts manufactures polyethylene utility carts that are utilized by a wide range of businesses and industries, including the document storage and destruction market. It offers both security and collection containers.

The company, located in Darien, Wisconsin, prides itself on being able to meet customer needs. “We are a small company and can respond to the customer,” says Cindy Lapidakis, vice president of sales and marketing.

Not only can customers purchase just one cart — there are no minimum order quantities — they can have Bomac modify the product to meet their specific needs. Those modifications and changes can range from custom decals or a forklift base to having the sides cut out of a bin so it can be placed at the end of a conveyor belt.

“We just do whatever we need to do to help the customer find a solution,” Lapidakis says.

The company was acquired in 2008 by T&C Industries, which also owns Royal Basket Trucks. Royal Basket manufactures vinyl, canvas and molded poly basket trucks and laundry carts at the same Darien facility that houses Bomac.

For the document destruction and storage industry, Bomac’s Recycle Cart can be used as a collection container or as a security container with a standard or slotted lid. One end of the lid is designed to securely fit under the lip of the cart; the other end drops down over a metal hasp so that it can be locked. “It doesn’t just sit flat,” Lapidakis explains. “It’s designed so it can’t be pried.” The cart measures 43.5-inches long, 29-inches wide and 37-inches high and has a 21-cubic-foot capacity.

In addition to the recycle cart, Bomac manufactures mail, linen, utility and produce carts as well as bulk containers. They are used by businesses and industries throughout the U.S. and are also exported by distributors, Lapidakis adds. “Evolving to meet the needs of the recycling market, our products are also utilized in the grocery, commercial laundry, janitorial, retail and postal markets,” the company says.

Jake, Connor & Crew

Jake, Connor & Crew is the “Apple” of the security bin and console companies.

Started in a garage — much like Apple computer company — 15 years ago in Toronto, the company has grown to be a leading supplier worldwide of executive consoles and wheeled bins designed specifically for the document protection and shredding industries. Its containers can be found in major hospitals, businesses and government offices including the Pentagon.

With security paramount among such users, the company recently introduced a series of electronic locks for its consoles which it says provide the “highest security locking system available for a shredding console.”

“They (customers) were asking for a higher level of security, something that not only was more secure but was also more visually secure to deter someone from trying to breach the security of the unit,” notes Gayle Nummelin, vice president and co-owner.

The electronic locking system utilizes a security card for unlocking a container rather than a traditional key.

“A simple wave of a key-chained security card gains your driver access to the console's contents without the use of a traditional key,” the company says. “The secure lock releases, the door pops itself open and it only needs a gentle push to lock it again. There is no lock on the exterior surface of the cabinet to pick, damage, or tamper with to gain entry.”

The electronic locks can be installed in the company’s consoles. Executive consoles — with its 40-inch gray Melamine a best seller — are available in sizes from 24 inches to 40 inches; an economy line of consoles in the same sizes is also offered. All models feature tamper evident, keyed alike lockable doors as standard, allowing one-key access to multiple units.

The company also markets a line of custom consoles, available in hundreds of colors and textures and with various slot openings.

“We are the manufacturer of all our products, so we have the opportunity to do anything to a console that the customer wishes,” Nummelin says. “We’re only limited by someone’s imagination.”

Among other products is a 66-gallon Retriever bin, which features a lockable third wheel, an “anti-fish” paper tray and high security lid with a keyed-alike integrated lock.

Other wheeled bins, ranging in capacity from 32 to 96 gallons, are available. They feature anti-fish paper slots and external hasp locking systems.

All of the company’s products are manufactured in North America. It also maintains a division in London for sales throughout Europe and Asia.

Best known as a premium supplier of Turtle Case containers to safely store and transport various tape formats, this Minnesota-based company has since branched into containers to safely store or transport sensitive documents.

Originally patterned after a standard cardboard banker’s box, the newly modified Turtle LocDocBox is now available with a slot in the lid so documents can be inserted and safely stored or until picked up for shredding.

The high-density polyethylene box is small enough — 15 inches long by 12 inches wide by 10 inches deep — to easily fit under a desk. The boxes, available in either black or beige, are water repellent.

“They’re small enough so they can be transported by hand,” notes Alan O’Regan, vice president-sales and marketing and an owner of the firm, which he and his partners purchased in 2004.

Perm-A-Store was started in 1988 in Wichita, Kansas, with its focus on offering a specially designed container to protect data tapes during transport and storage from the most common types of damage, including impact and contamination by debris or temperature and humidity.

The company has expanded its offerings and today offers more than 75 containers to protect every tape format as well as hard drive media. Capacities range from one to 100 tapes in a container and from a single hard drive up to 72 hard drives per container. Containers are double-walled and designed to retain tapes in a vertical orientation; IBM endorses the product.

O’Regan says Perm-A-Store is unique in that its containers were designed from the get-go for backup tapes and hard drives. The expansion a few years ago into the lockable document box — it is secured with two padlocks or other locking devices — was a natural progression for the suburban Minneapolis company.

The company also offers a line of fireproof safes designed for tape media and fireproof file cabinets to protect paper documents.

Prior to purchasing Perm-A-Store, O’Regan and joint-owner Ken Schneider worked in 3M’s data storage product area, which manufactured and sold data tapes, hard drives and removable media.

“We’re probably the only ones in the container industry that come from a data background,” O’Regan says. “We’re probably the closest thing to data experts that there are in the industry.”
